In the second episode of our series about the Startup Stage, which is part of the supporting programme at the Reeperbahn Startup Pitch on November 7th, we present today the participants of the category „Aviation & Space“. Our partner here is the Airbus BizLab.
Loud Steps helps blind passengers
LOUD STEPS is an app-based navigation assistant for blind and visually impaired travellers. The application helps users to find their way around airports more easily. Audio messages also make orientation easier in the aircraft itself. Founded in 2011, Boni, the company behind the development of the app, originated in Istanbul and now also has offices in Chicago, Berlin and London. LOUD STEPS participated in the support programme of the Airbus BizLab in Hamburg and is therefore particularly close to the aviation industry. The technology can also be used in many other locations, such as shopping centres, hospitals and sports stadiums.
Die Astronautin sends the first female German into space
At the foundation Erste deutsche Astronautin gGmbH the name says it all. Its mission is to bring the first German female astronaut to the ISS space station. There, the job of the astronaut is to advance medical research in space. Men have benefited most from this up to now, as it is mainly men who carry out self-tests. However, the female body reacts differently in many areas, not only in hormonal balance. Research results from space could provide important insights for millions of women on Earth. Two astronauts, Dr. Insa Thiele-Eich and Dr. Suzanna Randall, are already in intensive training. In addition to the specific scientific mission, the initiative also aims to inspire women and girls and encourage them to become more involved with scientific topics. .
msquare repairs fibre-reinforced plastics
Fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP) are materials with many advantages. They have a low weight, are easy to process and extremely stable. However, they are not indestructible. For example, minor damage to the fuselage and wings of aircraft where FRP are used is quite common. The startup msquare has developed a method to repair these „scratches“ without much effort. Thin, flexible metal sheets, which are heated by induction and can be precisely adapted to the damaged area, help to do this. msquare comes from Stuttgart and is a spin-off of the German Aerospace Center (ZAL).
EchoRing allows machines to communicate wirelessly
R3 Communications GmbH from Berlin, founded in 2015, has developed EchoRing, a technology that is used in industrial production. EchoRing transforms conventional WLAN chips into wireless real-time communication systems. The chips become so fast and fail-safe that machines can communicate reliably with them. You can see more about it in the video above. Machine to machine communication is becoming more and more the standard in industry 4.0, although it has so far taken place via old-fashioned cables. R3’s customers, among them such well-known companies as Bosch, Liebherr and Airbus, can save themselves the tangled mess of cables. EchoRing has also found its place in aircraft construction and therefore belongs to the Startup Stage „Aviation & Space“.
The jury for the „Aviation & Space“ category includes Anja Bulmann, Manager and Coach at Airbus BizLab, and Roland Gerhards, Managing Director of ZAL. The pitches will take place from 1:30 to 2:30 pm.

The Reeperbahn Startup Pitch on November 7th at the Mojo Club offers its visitors an extensive supporting programme in addition to the grand finale in the evening. A highlight will be the Startup Stage. From five industries four startups each will show a jury of experts and the audience what they are up to.
